Jamaican-American writer Fiona Zedde Lewis has authored best-selling novels and collections of short stories for adults. “Dreaming in Color” marks her debut writing for young adults–and a compelling debut it is.

Carlene (Cee-Cee) has come to the U.S. from Jamaica to join her mother, who has been working for two years to bring her daughter to join her. But excited as Carlene is to be reunited with her beloved mother, she finds life in her new country daunting. She misses her island home and the father she left behind.

High school is a difficult territory to navigate for many teens–bullying, mean girls, jock/thug boys, and just the normal daily stresses of trying to succeed in classes can present awesome challenges. When a group of mean girls led by one of the most popular girls in the school targets Carlene, taunting her for her accent and her skin color, she turns to art as a refuge. Problems with her mother, who reveals a secret Cee-Cee is not prepared for, just adds to her feelings of isolation.

Then Carlene meets Greg, another teen from Jamaica. They bond over their shared feelings of dislocation and their inability to fit in. .

Fiona Zedde Lewis has set her sights on other pinnacles with each novel, and once more she has struck the mark, soaring higher and higher! In her first YA novel, Lewis has crafted a world of pain and pleasure, family and friendship and a new world in juxtaposition to another time and place!

Carlene, more affectionately known as Cee-Cee, is a lovely Jamaican flower, who finds herself transplanted in American soil that is none to willing to experience the blooming of her colorful talent! She wants to fit in. She has even dreamed about it. But she continues to be stalked by not one bully, but an entire wolf pack, comprised of females and males. Alpha dogs, they are every where she turns, at school and sometimes beyond the school's jurisdiction. But Cee-Cee hangs in there, for what else can she do? Her life is in Tampa now. Miss Nella, her young and beautiful mother, is hardworking and long suffering, and she isn't about to throw in the towel herself, in spite of a low-paying job, no friends and lingering sadness from a less than satisfying, clearly abusive former marriage.

So life goes on. And as with the world outside of fiction, better days arrive, though not before Cee-Cee is strained and tested at school and at home.

I loved this novel. Cee-Cee is a worthy protagonist for teens and adults to love and champion through her trials and tribulations. She grows and changes, just like you and me and the author herself! I adored Miss Nella and her budding romance with the dynamic Virginia! Greg and his family stole my heart, and I'm certain they will snatch yours as well. Although I could have popped all of the members of the wolf pack, I knew they would get their comeuppance in the end, and they did! A dynamic character who changed in many ways throughout the novel, Carlene's gift as an artist sat well with my writer's soul, and most importantly, I was fulfilled in the final closing of my Kindle copy....right down to the peculiar couple that gave Carlene a ride home one night. (Wiping my forehead...because that could have gone a much different way!)

Felicitaciones, Fiona Lewis! I patiently await your next adventure, lady of the plume!

Loving the way you stretch with each literary offering,

Dreaming in Color edition by Fiona Lewis Children eBooks Reviews

When I began to read this book I started to draw my own conclusions to the characters and their lives, only to be shocked and enthralled with the directions that their lives actually took. Dreaming in Color is a coming of age story with a twist that details the life of a newly transplanted to America, Jamaican high school student who already has to deal with being different when she finds out that her mother is a lesbian, add to that the fact that her only friend is in love with one of her tormentors and you have a great story that takes you for a nice roller coaster ride through the lead character Carlene's life and brings you out on the other side satisfied but wanting more. As someone else said I would like to know more of Carlene's story. This book is great for all ages as it has something that everyone can relate to particularly teenagers and young adults.
Just finished Dreaming in Color and am so glad that I cancelled my Netflix so that I have time to actively stimulate my mind. What a wonderful novel for young adults and for the rest of us who were once young adults. Dreaming reminded me that there are so many life altering experiences that happen in high school that indefinitely effect how we respond to the world when we grow older. The main character Cee Cee suffers greatly for being different from new the students she is surrounded by in the US after she moved from her home in Jamaica to join her mother who she loves dearly. She finds that her mother is her only ally in America but doesn't share the anguish she experiences as a victim of bullying for not wanting to upset the peaceful space her mom tries to provide for her. When Cee Cee finally finds a friend, as their relationship evolves, this excellent writing proves how important it is for our well being as humans to engage in healthy sharing, caring relationships.

I have read and enjoyed all of Fiona's other full length novels and can say with sincerity that I am a fan of her other works, written under the name Fiona Zedde. Dreaming in color is definitely a deviation in content but the writing is still as fiercely rich and captivating when she is writing as Fiona Lewis. I look forward to whatever is coming next.
Life has been anything but great for Carlene (a.k.a. Cee-Cee) since she moved to America from her home in Jamaica. In Jamaica, life was as close to great as Cee-Cee's life would get. She had friends, an art scholarship at a summer camp...and she had a life.

Life in America was completely opposite. She had no friends, no art scholarship...and she had no life. All there was, was a pack of high school wolves ready to devour any prey that even dared walk past. The prey they had in their sights happened to be Cee-Cee.

Dreaming In Color by Fiona Lewis was a good book, but it wasn't the most exciting. The beginning was slow and not very interesting. The end was better, but it seemed like the author was trying to end the book too quickly. There were many spelling errors, but they were easy to look past. If you are looking for a quick read, then Dreaming In Color is the book to read!
