Guinotte Wise comes across as a man of many talents, who has lived a varied life full of danger, adventure and drama big and small. Whether this is true or not, I don't know, because I don't know him; if not, it only reflects even more positively on him as a writer, because he tells stories of men who live lives full of danger, adventure and drama big and small. The men in NIGHT TRAIN, COLD BEER are strong and rugged, facing what just might be the last decision they'll ever make, or they're young, innocent and timorously sticking their toe into the freezing water of the real world. They are no strangers to the types of tools most of us recognize only from Carhartt commercials, and in this sense the stories reminded me of those found in Jared Yates Sexton's collection, AN END TO ALL THINGS.Each of the stories in this collection could be described as coming-of-age stories, even when the protagonist is in his seventies. They are stories in which death strolls casually across the stage, as in "Night Train" or "Rotated." In "Cold Beer," death pops up with a wink and a smile. In "Ruined Days" death brings with it a laugh-out-loud twist.
The stories aren't all about death, however, and the loss of innocence one comes to expect from the coming-of-age tale is not always the innocence one expects to be lost, as in the case of "Flood Summer and the Vargas Girl." "Flexibility" and "Derby Day," while dramatically different, mine the same vein, with different outcomes and consequences. This is one mark of a talented writer, to tell the same story over and over in an infinite variety of ways.
I enjoyed these stories, and can't wait for the next collection.

Night Train Cold Beer Guinotte Wise 9781937302092 Books Reviews
Great story telling. Very enjoyable read. Will look into more of Guinotte Wise's books. - Erick
Any guy who grew up in the midwest after WW2 will be transported back to that simple time of yearning and innocence. These wonderful short stories bring back memories of booze, smoking and possibilities with Vargas girls. The language is real and the images are powerful, everything from bullfighting to butterflies. Mr. Wise, thank you for the trips. jv
A really good book of short stories. Fun to read. Looking forward to his next book.
I first read something by this author about a year ago in a literary review, and looked him up to see if there were any books by him. His writing is amazing so had to hunt for more. No books then. But, I was glad to find this one and wasn't disappointed! It's amazing and a fast read as its only 131 pages. I see he has a novel being looked at, plus another collection of short stories coming. Can't wait! I will continue to follow Guinotte Wise because I think he's a real literary find. So rare. A novel would be welcome.
Anyway, the stories in Night Train are quite varied and I especially enjoyed the ones that took place in the 50's, laughed out loud now and then, even in some of the darker stories. He's an exceptional writer. Sure and deft and fluid. I'm looking forward to more.
